Wakizashi translates to "side inserted sword." This is because the weapon is a short sword that is small enough to be inserted into an "obi," which is a traditional Japanese belt. Interestingly, the sword was usually never worn on its own â a katana would be paired with the weapon, making the wakizashi a "companion sword." It would be used as a backup or after the work of the katana was finished.Â
At Swords of Northshire, we know how important it is to showcase all types of swords, no matter how big or small they may be. The wakizashi sword may seem like an unworthy challenger, but with its strengths, there was much to admire. Due to its smaller size, it had a much lighter weight to it, allowing for single-hand use. This would in turn allow warriors to use the sword for faster cuts and thrusting attacks. It was the perfect weapon for close-quarters combat. When people would wear this blade on them, it was not a sign of weakness â it was a sign of strength and discipline.Â
Interested in various customization options? We allow custom engravings to be put onto the wakizashi blades themselves â as well as the option to hand sharpen the blade or to leave it unsharpened. We can do these extra customization options to our blades thanks to our master craftsmen, who hand forge the blades from high-carbon steel using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation. Not only does this allow extra customization, but it also makes the blades both stronger and sharper, enabling them to truly stand the test of time and look beautiful in the process as well.Â
Seeing these amazing swords online does not do them the proper justice â you must try these out for yourself and feel the weight of the blade in your hands. So, order now! Browse our collection and find your perfect wakizashi for sale today.Â
